Belgium: Moroccan criminals to serve sentence in Morocco

The federal government concluded an agreement with the Moroccan government to enable, for certain criminal offense, to serve the sentence in Moroccan jails. According to Belgian minister of justice, Laurette Onkelinx, about 60 Moroccans will be sent to Morocco to serve out their sentence in the first phase. The agreement is supposed to help solve jail overcrowding in Belgium.

The Belgian government came to Morocco with an extensive delegation in order to sign seven agreements. Another agreement was signed regarding police cooperation between the two countries. That is considered especially important in the war against terror. Belgium will also be sending a judge over to Morocco, to serve as liasion. Federal judge Daniel Bernard will start from April 1st to follow up on terror, organized crime and drug trade cases in Morocco.
